Every Falling StarFall 2016 Non-Fiction
Sunhju Lee spends his early childhood in relative comfort in Pyongyang, North Korea where his father was a military officer serving the "eternal leader," Kim Il-sung. Young Sungju believes all the fabulous stories he is told about this leader - as, seemingly, does the entire population of North Korea. However, when Sungju father fell from grace, the family was banished to a remote area. Gradually falling into extreme poverty, his father disappears while trying to smuggle goods from China, and his mother disappears while traveling to beg for help from her sister. Left alone, Sungju joins a gang of boys and overtime becomes a strong, amoral leader.
The story reveals a bond with his gang members that is so deep that they become a "band of brothers." To this day, Sungju calls them his brothers and doesn't reveal their real names for fear of government retribution.
This exhilarating, true tale of a young boy's survival and escape from North Korea is a page- turning reminder that freedom should not be taken for granted.
