Review:

The extremely shy Pinmei lives high on the mountain with her beloved grandmother Amah, a talented embroiderer, also known as "The Storyteller." Pinmei's only friend is Yishan, a somewhat mysterious boy with a red cap who lives alone in a hut higher up the mountain. When villagers arrive at their hut to hear one of Amah's stories, Pinmei hides. However, once grandmother starts a story, Pimei ventures out of hiding to listen.

One night, as the soldiers of the despot "Tiger Emperor" are storming up the mountain to kidnap Amah, she hides Pinmei in an old clay vat, and tells her that she can always trust Yishan.

When Pinmei and Yishan learn that that the emperor will release any prisoner if the supplicant brings him "the luminous stone that lights up the night," the two young friends set off on a quest to obtain the stone and thus Amah's release. As they travel, Pinmei gradually overcomes her shyness and recounts her grandmother's stories.

An exquisitely written and beautifully illustrated fantasy adventure.
