Review:

This feature-length animated fantasy is based on the My Little Pony Equestria Girls toy line and Legend of Everfree , the fourth in a series of films centered around the line, reimagines the popular My Little Pony toys as teenaged girls. Here, they're on a field trip to Camp Everfree and almost immediately encounter eerie forces which appear to be linked to a spooky legend told around the campfire fire. As a chain of unsettling events transpires, the girls begin to develop unusual powers - that only work within the boundaries of Camp Everfree. One of the girls, Twilight Sparkle, is especially troubled because her "magical abilities" come with darker tendencies and Twilight fears she's responsible for the string of destructive happenings. But it soon appears one of the camp owners may be responsible for the mischief and that he intends to the shut the camp down for good. That sparks a battle in which the Equestria Girls try to save Camp Everfree and protect the endangered campers.

Some scenes include confrontations with the "bad guys" and the girls are occasionally in peril; but nothing here rates as overly scary, even for very young viewers. Bonus features on the DVD/Blu-Ray include an Audio Commentary feature provided by the film's crew; Sing-Along features; and a fictional "blooper" reel with animated gags and "outtakes."

This 74-minute film has interesting, but not overdone, art direction, and the "pony" characters have been amusingly reimagined as teen girls. It's not the most sophisticated script you'll ever see but at least the storyline advances the action without getting convoluted. Yes, the characters are one-dimensional, and yes, some of their squeaky voices may grate on grown-ups' nerves. But it also has a soundtrack of musical numbers that are above average in quality and in performance. The pre-teen girls most likely to make up the audience for this program will stay entertained. And thanks to a twist in the final scene, we're bound to see another installment in the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls film franchise.
