Published by the National Wildlife Foundation,Ranger Rick, Jr. is designed and written for children ages four through seven. An illustrated welcoming animal pal, Ricky the Racoon, guides readers through the magazine's content and can be found on each page sharing animal facts, asking comprehension and enrichment questions, and giving small tasks to increase readers' focus and attention. Ricky's companion, a friendly little skunk, is hidden throughout the pages for children to find. Each issue covers a variety of material, but focuses on a primary topic such as Wild Cats, Loons, Animal Feet, and so forth. Children read about animal characteristics, preferred foods, habitats, and behavior; and, pick up fascinating tidbits such as giraffes hum at night and seahorses are the world's slowest fish. The magazine also includes a variety of games and activities including jokes, riddles, matching games, word-completion, recipes, and crafts. There's even a free pullout poster in every issue. The magazine's mixture of story lengths and activities present material for a variety of age and reading levels and keeps children engaged by avoiding overly-wordy or monotonous tasks. Ranger Rick, Jr. is filled with bright and colorful photographs and illustrations delivering just the right balance between pictures and text for this particular age and reading level.
