RelationShapesSpring 2017 Mobile Apps
RelationShapes, an app for children ages three - six, is designed to teach children spatial awareness and visuoperceptual problem-solving. The game features two stages: Match It and Picture It. In Match It, children are presented with two side-by-side pictures with the same number and collection of shapes; they then have to make their side match by moving, rotating, and/or resizing the shapes. After completing this portion of the task, they move on to Picture It in which they use the shapes to create pictures with colorful backgrounds and stickers (e.g., googly eyes, smiles, arms, etc.) that they earn along the way. They can save and even share their creations.
Throughout the activities children learn a wide variety of spatial skills and concepts; for example, by rotating and resizing shapes, they visually see that they can do that without changing the fundamental properties of the shape. In other words, a small triangle is no less a triangle once it has been moved, rotated, or resized. It still has three sides and three vertices. These activities also build and hone visual discrimination of shapes, spatial awareness, and fine motor skills.
Parents especially enjoyed and appreciated was the multi-touch screen feature that allows parent and child to work together on some of the more challenging puzzles. Parents can create up to four user profiles, which they can then track throughout the app's eight levels.
In addition to the app's digital content, parents can print six Extended Learning Resources to act as enrichment activities. RelationShapes is a well-rounded game that provides a solid basis for later geometric coursework, in preschool and beyond.
