Sight Words Games in Candy Land: Reading for KidsSpring 2017 Mobile Apps
Sight Words in Candy Land is a sight-word learning game for children aged two through nine years. Players are tasked with helping the unicorns of Candy Land grow their famous candy flowers by playing games and earning items for their garden. After creating a profile and selecting an avatar, players (or caregivers) select the appropriate Dolch sight word list (i.e., PreK/K, Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, or Third Grade as well as Nouns or All Words). Children can choose to work with the corresponding flash card set or go on a learning adventure. The Learning Adventure portion of the app includes eighteen games for each of the word lists. Children practice recognition and recall memory by popping bubbles as the narrator reads the words inside, playing sight word bingo, using the candy typewriter to spell dictated sight words, and more. And, children are rewarded with items for their candy garden. The flashcards and games teach and solidify recognition and recall of all 220 Dolch sight words as well as 94 additional nouns. Despite a few errors, the app will be fun, and hopefully successful, for children who are motivated by verbal praise.
