Review:

Yellow Scope's 19-experiment kit explores three scientific concepts: acid and base chemistry, pH scale and neutralization. With a "voice" that appeals to both the scientific and creative parts of the brain and a mantra to "think like a girl"— be curious, be creative, and stick with it. The well designed and well written lab notebook does not dumb down or frilly up; it speaks directly and appropriately to its tween audience. It encourages trial and error, observation, persistence and how to learn from mistakes. The scientific process to a T.

The solid science experiments are based on three labs: Colorful Cabbage (Acid-Base Indicator), Be A Maker (Make Your Own Indicator and pH Paper), and Color Flip Flop (Neutralization). In each lab, there's a background, experiments (along with a list of what's needed), what's going on, design ideas for additional experiments, and why each concept matters. For instance, the Colorful Cabbage Lab's "Why Does it Matter?" page offers examples of acids and bases as tasted in sour candies, how the garden soil's pH determines the pink or blue blossoms, how the gases from burning fossil fuels may create acid rain, and that a chemical reaction in car batteries produces electricity needed to start the motor.

All reports indicate that our testers are lining up to follow the Yellow Brick (Scope) Road to more science kits.
