Review:

Cluster is a clever twist on an old-fashioned game.

While the how-to rules of this cool and innovative strategy game are clear and adequate, when playing our first game we sort of missed some of the subtleties. Part of that is because this two-payer game looks like another standard pegs-in-holes-game, the kind that goes back centuries. But it's not.

The tricky part isn't just that the 13 colored pegs each player moves around the board, blocking opponent's moves and setting up his or her pieces for a win, are two different heights—short and tall. The trickier part is that the game board's holes, where you move those pegs, are different depths! To win, you need all of your 13 pegs side-by-side somehow, in any order—except that they have to be level, meaning the same height.

When playing Cluster, you're going to need not only strategic thinking to win, you'll need "depth perception." Still, Cluster is a simple game and easy to get up-and-running fast. You pick up the strategic subtleties as you play more and more—and you will.
