Review:
Sumptuously illustrated by Anita Lobel, this Scottish fairy tale set in Norway is a suspenseful variant of Beauty and the Beast. Three daughters of a widow talk one night about marriage. The two older sisters dream of rich and titled suitors. The youngest says, "I don't care what title he has or how wealthy he is, I only want him to be kind and good and to love me. I'd even be content with the Black Bull of Norroway." Her idle words, of course, come back to haunt her, but never fear. Love (plus the revelation that the Black Bull is a prince under an enchantment) conquers all in due time. The pictures add immeasurably to a tale that runs a bit too long.
