Review:

Author/illustrator Kristyna Litten's new picture book is a whimsical tale with all-ages appeal. In what appears to be a wasteland of junk, an industrious little robot named Norton collects "battered wheels, rusty cogs, broken springs" and all manner of discarded items for his useful inventions-inventions that include Norton's mechanical doggy companion, Alpha. When Norton spots a lone flower blooming among the junk, he takes it back his workshop for experimentation. But, unfamiliar with growing things, he soon discards it as having no useful function. Time passes, Norton prepares for his next treasure hunt, opens his doors, and finds a field of flowers stretching away as far as he can see. A full-bleed, four-page spread allows readers to share his surprise, and Litten's quirky-cozy depiction of Norton's utilitarian life and his joyful discovery that not everything must have a practical use is a treat throughout.
