Review:
In this warm-hearted picture book debut by author Jackie Azua Kramer and veteran illustrator Maral Sassouni, an umbrella of contested ownership becomes the focal point for the limitless possibilities of imagination. As Elephant (round and rosy-pink with a sweet smile) takes a rainy day stroll under a big green umbrella, one by one, the creatures Elephant encounters claim that it is not an umbrella at all. Hedgehog says it is a boat that sailed through a pod of playful dolphins. Bear claims that it is actually a fantastical flying machine. Cat insists the umbrella is a tent, meant for days spent studying forest flora. Or could it be the cane that supported Old Rabbit on trips to the pyramids, "moss-covered ruins," and treasure-filled caves? Sassouni visualizes each scenario with captivating detail, matching the appeal of Kramer's well-paced text. After Elephant remembers imagining the umbrella as a pirate sword, a baseball bat, and a tightrope walker's balancing pole, the rainy day gives way to sunshine, the sharing of stories, and the new friends making plans for umbrella adventures to come.
