Review:

PBS Kids Look and Learn: Insects contains a poster, insect identification card, reference book, and unique Plexiglas jar. The insect jar is collapsible and can be packed for expeditions. Handle with care once a bug is inside. The lid has holes for airflow, and the two lenses (magnifying and super-magnifying) are excellent. The bottom is printed with a ruler. Altogether, it is a clever, compact, and functional design.

The booklet suggests the following outdoor activities: Watch some busy ants. Feed them and see them carry away crumbs. Go on a nighttime firefly hunt. Catch fireflies gently, place them in the jar, and watch them blink before releasing them. In some regions, kids can collect cicada shells, once the bugs have shed them.

Beetles, bees, butterflies and moths are some of the highlighted groups. In an era when necessary insects are disappearing because of pollution, entomology is more important than ever. This kit reinforces that insects can be marvelous and mysterious.Their anatomy, behaviors, and life cycles are fascinating.
