Eleven-year-old Alex Petroski is obsessed with rockets and beings from outer space. He's already built a rocket he hopes to launch, he's making a series of recordings on a golden iPod to explain both humanity and himself to aliens. Alex is nothing if not optimistic and resourceful. He needs to be as he is basically the cook and caretaker for a depressed, non-functioning mother. He has an older brother, Ronnie, in California who is a sports agent of minimal success. As far as Alex knows, his father is dead.

Alex has saved enough money for a train ticket to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he plans to attend the Southwest High Altitude Rocket Festival (SHARF to those who like acronyms) to launch his rocket. After cooking and freezing enough meals that he's planned take care of his mother while he's away, he gets to the festival, registers, and sets up his tent. The rocket fanatics are a kindly bunch who take an interest in Alex. Their help takes myriad forms that ultimately take Alex on an adventurous road trip.

Through the text of recordings that Alex makes for the aliens, the reader is privy to his first-person, extremely unusual travels. See You in the Cosmos is for rocket enthusiasts, the scientifically minded, and readers who will relish in an extraordinary adventure with a charming boy and his dog named Carl Sagan.
