Sing & Spell the Sight Words - Volume 5 - Animated DVD

Fall 2017 DVD
Ages: 4 - 7 yrs.
Producer: HeidiSongs
Review:

Reading specialists define "sight words" as a set of about 100 words that reappear frequently in almost any page of text. They say these sight words are critical to learn not only because they are used so often but also because they tend to be words that cannot easily be sounded out.

Sing & Spell Volume 5, produced by HeidiSongs, is suggested for children ages 4 - 7. It is an updated version of a previously issued DVD of the same name, and it now includes more animated graphics, including cheerful felt finger puppets. Aside from these new animations, Sing & Spell Volume 5 sticks to the format used with its usual format to teach educational concepts through music and movement. Live-action young adults dance and pantomime to short songs - some less than a minute long - as on-screen text, graphics, and puppets reinforce the spelling and pronunciation of each word. Music styles vary for each selection and include kid-friendly versions of Rock and Hip-Hop, giving this product a slightly more modern feel than other products in this series.

Words covered here include the numerals one through ten, along with a sequence titled "Zero the Hero." It also offers songs for 19 other sight words including about, around, saw, says, under, and which. One of the words covered is "fight" and in addition to providing the spelling and pronunciation, the song also suggests alternatives to physical fighting, telling kids to "talk it over, walk away, find another game to play."

The very brief song length does allow parents or teachers the flexibility to play just a few songs at a time, and lyrics and dance/pantomime moves certainly are basic enough for kids to memorize with a few repeated viewings. Sing & Spell Volume 5 doesn't offer the most sophisticated production value but it is colorful and peppy, making this DVD appropriate for general, inclusive, and special education classrooms, or for families with kids who need a little extra homework help with sight words.
