Review:

Avuncular singer-songwriter-musician-actor Terrence Hall (aka Terry a la Berry) pairs his lived-in vocals with an appealing conversational style, notable jazz licks, and songs that impart healthy, child-respecting messages of acceptance reminiscent of Fred Rogers. A veteran drummer for Arlo Guthrie, Hall pokes catchy fun at that profession in "Play It Faster" ("you can always tell when a drummer is knocking at your door, cause the knocking will speed up and he can never count past 4"). In "Take a Hike," an upbeat invitation to kids to go outdoors and discover that "one smile is worth a thousand tweets." Anything is possible in "Mermaids and Unicorns" and children are reassured that "It's All Right to Change" as they grow and learn. Hall's passion and skill as a musician are front and center in "Play the Drums," an increasingly exuberant, irresistible percussive ride ("I wake up in the morning, I just want to play my drums"). The title track, "My House" (with The Battersby Duo), movingly reflects Hall's thoughtful side in a gentle but firm statement of inclusion: "Everyone, anyone is welcome in my house…My door is always open, there's no test to come in…"
