Review:

With deftly layered vocals and expertly tuneful melodic lines, the well-honed Salamanders country-rock band (Cowboy Andy, Matthew Nord, Russ Gay, and Antonio Alvarez) capture the fun and wonder of childhood in quirky, witty, and surprising original songs. The similarities that unite us fuel "Let's Sing a Song" ("we all like snacks and cuddles and we all like playing games … " tall or small, boy or girl, brown, pink or black or white"); "Poppy," a lively bluegrass tune, celebrates the everyday miracle of a small child's life; and the inspired all-instrumental "Skeleton Rag" is a delicious, dance-along blend of ragtime piano, electric rock and "Phantom of the Opera"-like drama. The bounce in "Golly G Gus" is pretty much irresistible and for sheer, off-the-wall silliness it's hard to beat "Matt Damon Magnetized Me" and "The Cat" (a fat feline who "could be easily confused with a door stop or a really old loaf of Wonder Bread"). The quirkiness can be shaped by parental tenderness, too. "Lovely Goodbye," performed with vocalist Andrea Harsell, paints a touching and relatable scene of mom and dad tucking their little one in for the night.
