This lap-friendly Folkmanis narwhal puppet represents one of nature's rarest ocean animals, often called unicorns of the sea (even though they are porpoises that can weigh up to 4200 pounds). The narwhal's long "horn" is actually an ivory tusk tooth that protrudes through the upper lip and can grow longer than eight feet. In the Folkmanis puppet interpretation, the tusk can be manipulated by inserting four fingers into the upper jaw opening (while the thumb is positioned in the lower jar) to mimic a variety of gestures or movements. Other puppet features (such as fins and mottled dark markings) also resemble the actual animal. A lower-belly pocket offers an extra option for wiggling the tail or assisting with swimming movements.

An accompanying information card provides a myth about how the narwhal got its tusk, and numerous children's books can encourage additional fun with this puppet. Two examples are Emily Dove's Wendell the Narwhal and Katie Marsico's Narwhal (A Day in the Life: Polar Animals).
