Review:

Many moms worry about the amount of time their children spend on smartphones, tablets, computers, and TV. And, it's fairly a safe assumption that the majority of time children are using these devices, they are not accessing educational content (maybe not even safe content). LeapFrog addresses those concerns with Epic: Academy Edition, a seven-inch, 16 GB, shatter-safe, wi-fi-enabled tablet for children aged three through nine years. The tablet has over twenty pre-loaded games and videos as well as access (with wi-fi) to over 750 games, videos, and eBooks.

The tablet includes (now) standard features: a clock, calendar, camera, notepad, weather app, and more. Also, the high-quality, educational content includes Word of the Day, which pronounces the word, shows the spelling, defines it, and uses it in a sentence. Each day the sentence builds upon the one before it, slowly creating a story that engages children and draws them in each day. There is also a coloring app, photography editing app, an art app, and so much more. And, all of the content is pre-screened as educational, safe, and age- and learning level-appropriate.

Parental Controls include viewing usage details, setting maximum per/day playtime, setting the hours that children can play, partitioning time by content type (e.g., video clips, games, etc.), the ability to block/approve/add websites, and so forth. Additionally, parents can set different usage controls for weekdays versus weekends, which we found extremely useful since our family's screen time rules are more lax on the weekends. This is a safe, educational alternative to sharing an adult phone or tablet.
