Review:

Children's picture book author Michael Mahin brings to vivid life the childhood and formative years of Muddy Waters, portraying the great blues artist first as an orphan raised by his grandmother, a little boy who "was never good at doing what he was told," and who would be profoundly influenced by the music of his childhood: "fish fry music … shake off the dust and wring out your worries and laugh and cry and feel alive music." Mahin's deft narrative, resonant for both children and adults, takes Waters from his miserable days as a young sharecropper facing overt racism in the south, to his years in Chicago as an aspiring musician— where he is held back by a different kind of racism—to his rise as one of the most prominent figures in American music. Evan Turk's full-page, double-spread, multimedia illustrations (watercolor, oil pastel, marker, newspaper collage) are frameable, a stunning complement to Mahin's vivid prose.
