Review:

National Geographic: Little Kids, geared towards children aged three through six years and well-sized for little hands, features developmentally-appropriate articles with a fitting balance of text and images for emergent and new readers. The writing and vocabulary of these articles and activities are challenging so as to engage, but not so much as to frustrate or deter.

Each issue features several main articles such as "Whales in the Frozen Sea," "Wolf Family Fun," and "Big Blue Birds" that introduce readers to new animals, their habitats, their diets, their behavior, and so forth. But, there are also sections that answer questions and provide fun facts, for example why baby deer have spots and why crickets chirp. The magazines also have various thematically-related activities to practice pre-reading and reading skills. One activity may require children to match words with pictures while another may show pictures and partial written words which children must complete. Each of these activities are "fun games" for kids, while helping hone important skills. A well-designed introduction to discovering and reading about animals around the world.
