Review:

The DVD Do You Like Broccoli Ice Cream? & More Kids Songs offers 20 selections each clocking in at about two minutes. Program information says this product is aimed at Pre-K and kindergarten-aged children and the company's title, Super Simple, does indeed describe the level of the content. The title track "Do You Like Broccoli Ice Cream?" includes very basic musical phrases and repetitive lyrics: "Do you like broccoli? Yes, I do! Yes, I do! Do you like ice cream? Yes, I do! Yes, I do! Do you like broccoli ice cream? No, I don't! Yucky!" Fill in the blank with any number of food items, repeat the process, and back it up with very rudimentary animation of children and the items being described, and that sums up the formula. "The Shape Song #1" and "The Shape Song #2" use repetitive lyrics paired with simple images (people, animals, common household items, etc.) to focus on a particular shape, and where the shape appears in the images. Another song is the more familiar "Head Shoulders Knees & Toes." Again, the slow tempo allows young viewers to process the directions and perform the actions.

The animation on this DVD is very, very basic but it is bright and pleasant, and kudos to the producers for including a diverse mix of animated characters, including children with different skin tones and hair colors, and even ones in wheelchairs. Experts at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association say there is value in teaching children using repetitive sounds and movements because they help children to predict what comes next. The tunes may not be the most singable ear-worms, but as teaching songs, the original tunes on Do You Like Broccoli Ice Cream? & More Kids Songs could be used around the home and in pre-schools to engage children with easy-to-follow motions that are fun while also building memory and language comprehension, as well as promote social interactions.
