Review:

Buckle up! This isn't just a show about nice places to visit on your next vacation. Curious Traveler, a PBS series hosted by Scottish-born, Emmy-winning travel journalist Christine van Blokland, does a deep dive into whatever city is the focus of the half-hour show.

"This is your all-access pass," she says, inviting you to "come along on our field trip for grown-ups."

Venice? You won't see van Blokland nibbling on Cicchetti and sipping Prosecco. She's in St. Mark's Square grilling an art historian about the winged lions that are found on many of the buildings and statues.

In Rome, she wants to know where light comes from inside the Parthenon and why the altar is so big in St. Peter's Basilica.

Travel with her to Oslo and you'll learn about who the Vikings were and why their Viking ships have those curled things on the bows. Castles, palaces, that famous Edvard Munch "The Scream" painting? "So much to be curious about!" says van Blokland.

Curious Traveler goes a step beyond most travel shows that simply feature segments on touristy things to do (not that there's anything wrong with that). If you watch this show, you'll learn a lot and probably be inspired to visit. Or you might just be content to be a smarter armchair traveler. You won't even need to leave your house to find out fascinating tidbits of information about places and people around the world.
