The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur each year. Yet, despite that frighteningly high number, only approximately 5-10% of those injuries are ever actually diagnosed and treated. Unfortunately, in addition to frequently going unrecognized and/or un-diagnosed, these types of injuries are often treated as minor "bumps on the head." Consequently, players are pushed back into games while highly susceptible to additional, more serious injury.

All of these facts underscore the importance of children and youth understanding concussions, their causes, symptoms, and treatments. Rebound: Beating Concussions is an interactive eBook designed by Etcetera Entertainment, Inc. to just that end. When Daniel's twin sister, Isabel, sustains a concussion playing basketball, he takes it upon himself to learn as much as possible about her injury. Throughout the story, the reader is presented with vocabulary, graphs, charts, and images that he/she can drag into his/her notebook for later review. The story explains different types of concussions and lists common symptoms, but it also gives background information on basic brain anatomy, neuropsychological assessment, and treatment modalities (think, "What to Expect When..."). There are also several games and activities interspersed. For example, readers can explore the inner and outer parts of the brain, take a sample concussion assessment, and even practice word/memory games.

The app features an intuitive, easy-to-navigate design with the Table of Contents and Help tabs accessible on each page. The story has three different reading levels; however, the reader is asked at the end of each chapter if they'd like to decrease on increase the reading level. This adds not only long-term learning value (as the level of scientific material adjusts as well), but also provides versatility for the app's use with various age and ability groups.
