Review:

My Town Pets is a simulator-style game that features over thirty animals that children can adopt and raise. Players begin the game at the shelter where they choose a pet from ten birds, ten hamsters, seven cats, and seven dogs. After selecting their pet, they can take it to the vet for a check-up, the spa for some TLC, and even the pet-park for some fun in the sun. The scenes are full of interactive features that help children learn how to care for their pets. For example, at the vet, they can place their pets on the scale, get X-rays taken, and help the vet give vaccinations. Not only do these activities help teach children about their pets, but they can also be used for vocabulary development when parents/caregivers play with their children.

There is no on-screen tutorial or help button and navigation can be difficult when first starting the game. One of our very tech savvy young testers could not figure out how to adopt his pet, the very first step of the game, and it even took his game-loving Mom a few minutes to explore and figure out how to proceed. Navigation and game play was not as intuitive as we would have preferred. Another concern is the apparent lack of diversity in playable characters; 11 of the 13 characters appear to be white. And by default, the doctor is male and the nurse female.
