Review:

Josh Lovelace, keyboardist with the Grammy-nominated South Carolina rock band NeedtoBreathe, makes his winning, welcome solo debut with this "autobiographical" family album, drawing on his own childhood and fatherhood with imagination, depth of feeling, and excellent melodic and lyric chops. "Daddy's Beard" is a bouncy delight; the simple ukulele accompaniment in the short track, "Blanket" ("Gonna wrap you up in a blanket … "), belies its lulling warmth; and "Messy Bessy" is a toe-tapping hoot. Josh, a gifted multi-instrumentalist and expressive vocalist, is joined by top-notch musicians and guest singers. The latter include indie rock artist Ben Rector, featured on the humorous "A Bear in the Woods"; contemporary Christian vocalist Ellie Holcomb, who joins Lovelace on his delicate and wistful "More Time With You" ("When everything's said and done, and the road's a memory … "); and Sharon Hampson and Bram Morrison (of Canada's iconic music trio Sharon, Lois & Bram) on "Sing a Song for Me" ("Oh Daddy how was your day?/I know you're tired but I wanna play"). Children's voices add to the album's charm.
