Review:

Singer/songwriter Jessie Farrell graces the cover of Chirp Chirp Happy with her sun yellow guitar and a crown of flowers. As the portrait suggests, she brings a down-to-earth genuine sensibility to her music. From the smile-inducing opening title track, to the jazzy, dance-encouraging "Do The Bop Bop," and the harvest hoe-down of "Just in Time," this is a skillfully delightful album. Highlights include the playful "My Shadow," the diversity celebrating "So Many Ways," and the old timey, pickin' and grinnin' celebration of spring of "I Love Tulips." The joys of farm life and all its critters is explored in "Birds of a Feather," while "You Got Skunked" is a cautionary country song and "I Just Want to Be A Frog" explores amphibian aspirations. Fiddles, banjos and mandolins ring in the pastoral "Blackberry Picking," as well as the life cycle tracing "Ready to Go." Farrell possesses a lovely, natural voice, with a delightful British Columbian accent, and a warm friendly tone, similar to fellow Canadian Alanis Morisette. The album closes with a "Winterful Day" which makes one want to go play in the snow, and "Little Beaver," a fun little rocker about taking time to relax, aided by a tuneful kid chorus. Chirp Chirp Happy is a refreshing reminder to go outside and braid some daisies into our hair.
