Review:

The foot in the title belongs to the Statue of Liberty, and the symbolism of that right foot, revealed at the end of this humorous, subtly thought-provoking, and visually striking picture book by author Dave Eggers and artist Shawn Harris, may well elicit a lump in the throat. "Did you know that the Statue of Liberty comes from France?" Eggers asks, readers, writing in engaging, upbeat prose about the Statue's origins, construction, and meaning. "You probably know," Eggers prefaces many of the facts he presents, among them how the Statue was first assembled in France and towered above Paris for nearly a year before being disassembled, shipped to New York, and riveted back together. How its copper skin is "about as thick as two pennies," and was brown for decades until oxidation turned it green. How Thomas Edison proposed at one time the installation of a "giant record player" so that the Statue would speak. "But there is one thing that you might not know," Egger writes as he comes to the book's titular point, one that may well strike adult readers in particular as a fresh and powerful revelation about what the Statue of Liberty has always represented: freedom and safe harbor for all.
