Review:

A lively new CD from Joanie Whittaker wearing her children's music hat (Whittaker also co-fronts the Cincinnati-based indie Cla-Zels band). Listeners can expect fine acoustic musicianship, engaged kids' voices, and a sizeable helping of goofiness: "Oh! My Flamingo," "The Turkey Made a Monkey Out of Me." There are also humorous, good-for-you messages ("Don't Let Your Pleases Fly Out the Window," country-western style; and "Cover My Coughs," a reminder of the elbow technique—featuring the voice of animals and otherworldly characters). "Keri's Song" offers children the reassurance that "There's always a second chance for you in this world," and a stay-at-home dad gets a heartfelt tribute in "My Dad Ad," and fine blues guitar-work shapes "Boo Boo Blues" (although the shrill "wah" chorus could be toned down. There are spooky giggles to be had in "Scary Skeleton," although it could be a mite to macabre for some children ("If we take off all our muscles, if we take off all our skin, underneath we're a scary skeleton"). Dentists, however, couldn't ask for better PR than Whittaker's friendly visit to "Dr. Smile" from a kid's point of view.
