Review:

Designed to appeal to young LEGO® lovers, LEGO Magazine presents content common among children's periodicals. Each issue follows a single overarching story about LEGO characters through several different articles and activities. The discovery of a crime scene in the opening comic might give way to a tracking puzzle for kids to solve, then to another graphic interlude with the next part of the story. Each portion of the story is presented in comic strip form, and each section features matching games, mazes, and LEGO building directions framed as tasks for readers to help the characters to resolve their conflicts. Various issues are themed, focusing on LEGO City, LEGO Friends, or LEGO Ninjago, to name a few. Of course, each issue comes with a small LEGO building toy. And an extraordinary number of exclamation points!

Although initially I groaned to see yet another LEGO spin-off to lure my young fanatic, I realized that my prejudice was unfounded. LEGO Magazine incorporates an unusual number and variety of well-designed active puzzles and games which successfully engage readers in storytelling. The fast-paced format, and the reliance on comic strips, is likely to appeal to children who need some incentive and temptation to read, but proved wholly engaging for my own book-loving child. The addition of a toy is a mixed blessing; while I tend to think my house is at full LEGO capacity, the packets were (of course) readily embraced. For adults looking for regular reading material their children will enthusiastically embrace and look forward to reading, LEGO Magazine is at your service.
