Review:

Breezy fun is one appealing aspect of Muse, Cricket Media's science and technology magazine for ages 9 to 14, but judging from the lively letters page, it is the serious and informative content, framed around short and multi-page explorations of a specific topic per issue that keeps readers coming back for more. The September 2018 issue's "Everything is Chemical" theme is an example of just how dynamic and wide-ranging these explorations can be. The issue encompassed articles about how "citizen scientists" use chemistry and math to help monitor the health of waterways, the science behind taste buds-with commentary by a university psychologist whose field of study is taste and smell-interviews with a food chemist and a chemist and medical researcher, in-depth looks at the chemistry of bread and the air we breathe, and the multi-step, molecular chemistry used by scientists in the creation of medicines. Recipes for "Black Bean Brownies" and handmade soap bars include facts about the science involved in each. Each issue features content-related comic strips and adventurous cartoon teens that appear throughout the magazine's pages.
