Review:

Dino Dana is a half-hour show featuring an inquisitive and spirited tween with the heart of a paleontologist. Dana's curiosity and love of adventure drive her to explore the habits of dinosaurs. That isn't too difficult for her since the dinos coexist in her live-action world thanks to impressive CGI animation. Beyond using special effects simply to make the program more visually interesting this device is a great learning tool for young viewers. It provides scale and context so kids can see how big or small the dinos are compared to familiar things in our modern world.

Each episode includes two separate stories. In "Claw & Order," Dana and her family end up in a court room run by dinosaurs, trying the case of the Picnic Basket Slasher. In that same episode, the story titled "A Dino Never Forgets" sees Dana using her impressive knowledge of dinosaur herd migration to soothe an elderly neighbor who is unsettled by his move to a new home.

Dino Dana is well-crafted, well-acted, and thoughtfully scripted, with dinosaur facts central to the plot, rather than shoe-horned in. The art direction is clever and certainly will appeal to young viewers (although perhaps there's some creative license taken when it comes to the more brightly colored and patterned dinosaurs). Kudos to the show's creators for featuring a smart and spunky dinosaur-obsessed young girl, and for presenting complex science facts in a fun and age-appropriate way. Overall, it strikes just the right blend of education and entertainment.
