Review:

This beautiful series uses stop-motion photography to engage preschoolers in scientific discovery through ingenuity and play. With two separate stories in each half-hour episode, a fox named Fig discovers inspiring treasures in the "Finding Place." That's how Fig refers to the hull of a shipwreck where knick-knacks are scattered. And, as viewers learn, in the hands of an imaginative youngster, everyday knick-knack are stepping stones to adventure.

In "Moonlight Mermaid," Fig finds a paper bag, which comes in handy to hold prizes during a trip to a park. Later, a bunch of bags solve a problem that was preventing the Mermaid Manatee from performing. In "Hedge's Hatchlings," a mythical figure proves to be real and helps Hedge and his friends protect a nest of sea creatures. In "Train Story/Arooga Adventures!," pipe cleaners prove to be the perfect tool to help pass the time during a long train ride; and Gourd learns that uncertainty is half the fun when it comes to embarking on an adventure.

Sequences find inventive ways to celebrate the spirit of the Maker Movement, and plot elements also reinforce color, letter, and number identification. To boot, these gentle stories promote pro-social behavior as Fig and friends play and create together. The remarkable and thoughtful art direction of Tumble Leaf provides reason enough to tune in, if for no other purpose than to marvel at its visuals. Add to that the stellar educational content and Tumble Leaf establishes itself as a priority on the viewing schedule.
