Review:

If the daily news and social media sniping get you down, Chicken Soup for the Soul's Hidden Heroes may restore your faith in humanity. Hosted by Brook Burke-Charvet, this TV magazine-format program "turns the cameras on the everyday people who show compassion and kindness to strangers simply out of the goodness of their hearts."

Each episode includes three in-depth stories showcasing sincere people who blend passion, commitment, and determination. One woman trains mini-horses to be therapy animals and takes them to schools and veterans centers to raise the spirits of people who are struggling physically and emotionally. A teen scientist dedicates herself to solving health problems caused by polluted water. A group of athletes go for the gold in a competition designed especially for young people with disabilities.

Advocates of all kinds populate these well-produced shows but they share one trait: The desire to create a ripple effect of positive change through their actions. Thanks to the luxury of time devoted to each story, viewers are treated to seeing not only that person's actions, but also the positive reactions of people touched by the kindness.

Chicken Soup for the Soul's Hidden Heroes may have parents and kids alike wondering what they can do to be heroes in their own neighborhood.
