Review:

If your hectic family schedule (or stretched family budget) doesn't allow the luxury of world travel, but you still want your kids to appreciate world cultures, the solution may lie in The Voyager with Josh Garcia.

This documentary-style travelogue features Garcia as he cruises to exciting ports-of-call, meeting locals, sampling food, and learning about the art, customs, and natural features of the region. While this series was created in cooperation with Carnival Cruise Lines, the likable host, fascinating interviews, and dynamic camera work balance out the handful of commercial elements.

Garcia immerses himself in the cultures of the places he visits and his passion for the subject matter is evident. He cooks with the locals in Cozumel. He seems genuinely concerned about the fate of black howler monkeys at a sanctuary in Belize. And he doesn't just tour the site of a school for children in Roatán; he's down on his hands and knees along with the volunteers, creating a playground from the foundation up. In another episode, the destination is Hawaii where he tours a pineapple plantation, prepares a traditional dish for a luau, and gives paddle-boarding a try atop otherworldly blue waters.

As Garcia says in the show open, his mission is to "seek out the awesome people and places that aren't in the travel guides." Thanks to this program's production value, cultural sensitivity, and celebration of diversity, viewers are vicariously treated to the same thing.
