Review:

This animated series grew out of an iPad motion comic app of the same name and it follows the serial adventures of 10-year-old Niko. He is the last of his kind and his hero-journey sees him fighting shadowy forces of evil that transform innocent creatures into monsters. As he travels through dark, fantastical places, Niko is aided by Princess Lyra, and he wields a magic sword to vanquish the villains they encounter. It's a fun guilty pleasure that doesn't over-do it on the dramatic elements.

In an episode titled "The Forest of Fangs", Niko and friends are on a quest to learn about the Amulet of Power, but that entails unraveling an ancient riddle. In another episode titled "Skywhale City," a flying whale serves as the foundation for a city, and Niko must travel there to locate a piece of a map. The violence is tempered by the fact that Niko's sword shoots beams of light, so monsters don't die; they return to their innocent, pre-magic-spell forms. To balance out the program's tone even further, storylines are filled with suspense and danger but Niko takes on his awesome responsibilities with cheeky self-confidence. Yes, these treacherous lands are filled with wicked foes, but that doesn't mean he can't take a snack break or crack a joke. Princess Lyra is refreshing, too, as a bold warrior who proves she can give as good as she gets when it comes to battling bad guys.
