Review:

This 30-minute animated holiday film is based on the children's book Angela and the Baby Jesus, written by the late Frank McCourt, well known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Angela's Ashes. Angela's Christmas is set in Ireland in 1914 and based on a tale McCourt's mother told to him when he was a child.

Six-year-old Angela may not have much by way of material goods but this sweet little girl certainly doesn't lack compassion. However, when compassion blends with the logic of a little girl it leads to a big misunderstanding; the story follows the problems she faces as she tries to execute a good deed. Angela worries that the baby Jesus in her church's nativity set is cold and decides to take him home and swaddle him in a warm blanket "like a little holy sausage." Others, however, believe the baby Jesus has been stolen and Angela's earnest actions result in scenes of escalating tension.

Despite angry accusations, mad dashes down dark alleys, and even a fear of ending up in jail for her exploits, Angela's Christmas is charming, touched with humor, skillfully voiced and beautifully animated. This holiday movie celebrates generous hearts, kind deeds, and loving family bonds.
