Red Apple Reading

Spring 2019 Website
Review:

Red Apple Reading features three levels with over 1,000 games, activities, and videos designed to teach children ages 3-8 critical pre-reading and reading skills.

Level A is geared towards children ages 3-5 and offers eighteen, open-play activities that teach letter names and sounds, phonics, letter blends, vocabulary, rhyming, and pattern recognition/creation. The Carnival includes several main areas in which children play games and earn tickets as well as a Prize Tent. There's letter art (letter tracing with different paints and patterns), whack-a-letter, slideshows of images that start with featured letters, narrated stories, short learning videos, and more.

Level B, for ages five through seven, offers fifty, sequential, progressively-leveled activities that focus on short vowels, silent e, site words, and word families. Level C, for ages six through eight, focuses on long vowels, alphabetical order, vocabulary, higher-level site words, and reading comprehension. Both B and C levels share similar game/activities; only the focus and complexity change as skills increase. Children may be asked to match words and images, spell words from given images, complete sentences and more. The activities in both levels are divided into units, each with its own review. And, there are unit assessments as well to check progress.

The graphics and animations are colorful and the characters are friendly. And, the games themselves are simple-to-play, so children can focus on the educational content rather than complicated instructions.

The subscription-based website ($9.95/month, $39.00 for three months, or $59.00/year) grants full access to all activities in all three levels. It also provides an extensive parent dashboard with progress information for their child, the ability to lock/unlock levels and content, and printable resources including a usage guide, workbooks, lesson plans, and certificates.
