Lizzie McGuire
Spring 2001 TelevisionReview:
The Disney Channel never rests and its newest original offering is just about as fun and entertaining as anything for kids right now. The title of the new show comes from 13-year-old Lizzie McGuire, played by actress Hilary Duff. Meek and mild Lizzie is constantly getting into sticky situations at her middle school. What sets the show apart, however, is that while Lizzie is saying and doing one thing, the viewer gets to see what she's really thinking through the cartoon Lizzie. Lizzie's two best friends, Miranda and Gordon, are constantly helping her out of jams, and she has two fun and
funky parents, along with a know-it-all little brother. While I think
Disney's Even Stevens show does a slightly better job with similar material, the animated Lizzie makes for a very creative and innovative gimmick. It works and boosts the show to a new level. Lizzie's not strong and bold like so many of the girl characters on Disney shows. But cartoon Lizzie is. And most of all, kids will be able to relate to having a lot of thoughts in their heads that they want to scream out - but can't or won't.
