Review:
How do children come to understand death without fearing it? In Mexico, an old woman and her young granddaughter like to visit a place in the woods where the Monarch butterflies converge during their yearly migration, filling the air with gold. When the grandmother dies, she is missed terribly. The family remembers her on the Day of the Dead, making an altar in her honor in their house and then going to the graveyard to picnic and reminisce. The presence of the butterflies there brings back happy memories to the little girl. She realizes that death and change are parts of the circle of life and we can keep cherished beings alive through our memories. The illustrations are in muted pastels, conveying the cool air of Mexican pine forests as well as the somber emotions of this tale.
