Review:
Nowhere near as dramatic or compelling as Egan's prize-winning The Blunder of the Rogues of two years ago, this is a cautionary tale about the danger of spreading unfounded rumors. When a small dog named Marley arrives at a lodge run by bears, he is able to paint the premises in a single night, whip up a breakfast of Eggs Florentine, and regale the guests with the stories of his travels to faraway lands. But when he beats the lodge's owner, Preston, at checkers, Marley's troubles begin. The bear had been undefeated in 992 games, and his nose is out of joint. Preston spreads the rumor that Marley is a sorcerer and almost succeeds in having him run out of town. It will take a sophisticated listener to stay with this slow-moving--if commendable--tale.
