Review:
Erin, January, and Mouse are considered "damaged" children at the orphanage where they live. January builds a raft for two, Erin and himself. When this raft is launched into the local river, the younger Mouse joins the dangerous expedition by attaching himself to Erin like a limpet. They wash up on horrible mud flats where they are rescued by an ethereal child called "Heaven Eyes," who lives in abandoned buildings with "Grampa," an extremely strange old man. Gloom, mud, and dereliction suffuse this story which is shot straight through with love. Erin has the strength of character to keep the motley group together and to rescue the beautiful child whose history is as obscure and hurtful as their own. A highly original, haunting story.
