Review:
In pre-mythical Greece, Fronto, a poet transmogrified into an ass, meets Lucian and a young woman, Joy-in-the-Dance, while searching for an antidote to his enchantment. Encountering a diverse group of characters on the quest, Lucian not only listens to their stories with an increasingly discerning ear, he is taught by Fronto to embroider and improve upon their tales - suggesting possible origins for the Greek myths. Indeed, the author has an uncommonly good time with jokes and allusions to mythology, literature, poetry, and asinine behavior. If one thinks of Lucian as a young "Homer" learning to be a storyteller, what we've essentially got in this captivating fantasy is Lloyd Alexander teaching Homer.
