Review:
Another tale of a magical happening finds Wallace Hoskins, a small boy who always wears a large fireman's hat, suddenly growing taller. But, as the author tells us: "HIS LEGS WERE GETTING LONGER BUT THE REST OF HIM WAS STAYING THE SAME SIZE." Before the readers' eyes, Wallace looks to be standing on ever-lengthening, stretchable stilts. It is the illustrations by Martin Matje that keep us enthralled as the hero continues to "grow down." At once cartoon-like and painterly, they breathe near palpable life into what would otherwise be a one-note story. Children will likely remember the pictures long after the details of the story fade.
