In a country resembling Australia, seven teenagers decide to go on a camping trip to a remote area of the bush. They go up a sharp, straight ridge, then backpack down into a valley. Ellie, the narrator, becomes apprehensive when a large formation of darkened jets flies over their campsite. Returning home, she finds her premonition was well-founded. All her family members are gone and the dogs have died of thirst on their chains. The country has been invaded. Against heart-stopping hazards, the young people return to the bush and become guerrillas. The tightly-woven plot is believable in this complex, insightful, can't-put-down adventure.
