Review:
Remembering only abuse, Brat's greatest ambition is to eat a turnip minus the mud. Brat is scrawny, homeless, and of indeterminate age - twelve or thirteen. She finally finds a rotting dung heap into which she crawls for warmth. She is discovered there by an important-looking woman who is prepared to send her packing. Brat begs first for food and then for work. Receiving little of the former and an abundance of the latter, Brat, now re-named "Beetle" for the dung heap, begins her career as a fourteenth-century midwife's apprentice. With no resources but a rescued cat and untrained intelligence, Beetle blossoms into an appealing young woman who can and does cause consternation among her former tormenters.
