Review:
What child hasn't, at one time or another, longed for a magic wishbone or its equivalent? When Molly, the cat heroine of author/illustrator McClintock's Victorian costume drama, is granted this boon by the Fairy Godmother she never knew she had, our heroine is savvy enough not to squander her good fortune on anything frivolous. While she is pondering what her choice should be, the youngest of her siblings disappears. After a search for the missing kitten proves fruitless, Molly no longer has any doubt about what to wish for. McClintock's meticulous Victorian costuming of her cast of cats, geese and other animals easily rival's Kate Greenway's gifts in this department. Though some readers may find the work a trifle saccharine, many children will respond to its cozy setting and comfortable denouement.
