Review:
"I had a hippopotamus," begins the young narrator as he opens a box of animal crackers, "but I gave it to my mom." He gives a variety of wild animals - a warthog, a jaguar, a coyote, a crocodile - to his family and friends who, nonplussed, incorporate the life-sized animals into their daily activities. A kangaroo with her pouch is very helpful in Abuela's kitchen, for example. Viveros Lee's whimsical illustrations, using the lime greens, hot pinks and deep purples of the southwest, show a Hispanic family. Because of its repetitive text and limited vocabulary, this is a suitable book for parents and caregivers with less than fluent Spanish to introduce children to the language.
