Review:
When Eugene Ruffolo sings, in Italian, to "My little treasure/My little sunflower," most any child would feel warmed and soothed. Subtitled "Lullabies Sung by Fathers Around the World," this eclectic international mix of beautiful instrumentation and varied vocal styles ranges from velvety smooth to pleasantly idiosyncratic. Tracks are as different as Cesar Berlanga's stunning guitar in "Estrella de Mi Vida," and mbira artist Forward Kwenda's quiet rendition of "Be Peaceful, My Last-Born Child (Chinyarara Gotwe Rangu)," from Zimbabwe. Or tenor Olivier Marcaud's transformation of a French motet from the Middle Ages into a tender bedtime benediction, and Puerto Rican singer Sammy Figueroa's cozy shaker, rain-stick and silvery bell rhythms in "Puchi's Lullaby."
