Review:Children's literature abounds with spunky and endearing chickens. Little Hen is a welcome addition to the hen house. She lives on Mr. & Mrs. Fields' farm with four prize-winning hens who all look down on her for her small size and her ordinariness. She vows to do something wonderful; and when the snooty foursome lay eggs in the woods only to ignore them, Little Hen gets her chance. Mr. & Mrs. Fields and Arthur, the rooster, worry about Little Hen when she turns up missing, but her coop-mates barely notice. When she returns to the farm days later with five new chicks in tow, much to Arthur and the Fields' delight, Little Hen makes good on her vow. The sweetly skewed tempera illustrations are a perfect match for this tale of an underdog's - er, chicken's great achievement.
