Review:
Del Bianco’s gift for creating a variety of comic characters makes this well-produced album an around-the-world, tale-spinning tour. From Ghana we hear “How Anansi Got a Thin Waist,” in which a fat greedy spider gets his comeuppance. “Not Our Problem” is a Burmese cautionary tale about the foolishness of ignoring minor mishaps; they can, and sometimes do, lead to big disasters. “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” sports a baa-baa-ing Greek chorus, and a boy who cries wolf in a ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll-style. Other humorous selections from everywhere include “It Could Be Worse” (Russia), “A Leprechaun’s Tale” (Ireland), and “The Stolen Aroma” (Peru). Del Bianco is joined by performer, Christina Vasile, who varies the mood in a story about a little Comanche girl named She Who is Alone, the girl who sacrifices her most treasured possession in order to save her people from drought. Forever after she becomes a symbol of Spring. Del Bianco bookends these tales with songs of unity, “Around the World” and “Remember.”
